As a mother of six boys, Dr. Bonjorni says, “Dealing with fidgety kids is just something a teacher should expect.” Classrooms are really not designed for children to move around in. So, when we hear the word fidgety, what we’re really thinking about are our expectations for behavior in the classroom. How do we expect students to behave in school? Do we expect them to be still while learning, or have opportunities to engage and move.
A student standing, while doing his work, as long as it isn’t disruptive, doesn’t take away from learning. Every student is unique in their way of learning. If we can find ways to help them learn more information, then we want to do it.
We want students to become active, engaged learners. Fidgeting means students are movers and shakers. Teachers are able to to use the activity of a student to their benefit, and for the benefit of a classroom.
